The town of Sal Rei is far less developed than Santa Maria in Sal, but direct flights are making it easier to reach. Many of the new apartment blocks are set in the midst of very poor dwellings that lack sanitation or running water.

But deals in the region of £60,000 for one bedroom and £90,000 for two bedrooms should be possible

The Mar Azul Building plot is 200m from the main square in Sal Rei on the road out towards the airport and 300m back from Estoril Beach. It hjas a total of just 12 small apartments. there are no prices, announced.

It will have 8 apartments above two garages. Despite ists fragrant name, it is situated in the middle of a shanty town. Prices from £65,000 for generous sized one bedroom flats, . It offers a higher specification with mahoganny doors and aluminium sliding windows with reflective glass. Many have been sold to Italians but resales come up from time to time. It received full planning approval in 2005 but progress has been slow, due to the usual logistics problems.
