Boa Vista is not an all-weather airport

Boa Vista opened for international traffic only in 2008 after the runway at Rabil was extended. The airport authority ASA lacked the funds to put in all the safety and air traffic control and navigation equipment which exists at Sal, which had been paid for by South African Airways. As a result the airport closes at nightfall and when there are sand storms which sometimes blow in from the Sahara. This can disrupt flight schedules.

C from Cheshire sufferred the consequences.

"Tommy was so disorganised and unhelpful. We got stranded on the island for over 28 hours as the aircraft was old. The rumnway has no lighting so the airport closes at 6 pm and nothing can take off or land. If you are iunlucky enough to get stranded as we did, don`t expect to be taken back to an holtel for food and shelter. We waited for eight hours in the airport and at midnight were taken to a dirty guest house. Some people were just given mats to sleep on in the corridors of an apartment whilst the Reps went off to their beds."
