Cape Verde Hotels with magnificent views
Hotels far from the madding crowd of mass tourism on the outer
islands
It s possible to fly to other islands from Sal
and take a short taxi drive or ferry to find yourself in a completely
different world. These are our favourite smaller, less expensive
hotels with wonderful views over the sea and better service. They
are ideal for relaxing in a sunlounger and looking at the ocean.
All have 20 rooms or less. It is possible to visit two in a week
or all three in two weeks.
Hotel Jaguar Fogo
The Hotel Jaguar is built around a swimming pool
in the upper part of the town of Sao Felipe with a view over scrublands
to the sea far below. It is painted in vibrant orange and yellow
to match the sunshine.
Its rooms are well furnished and mostly have baths.
You can see Brava, when the clouds disperse on a fine day. It is
well run by a Portuguese lady and offers Fogo wines from the volcano
and a nice restaurant with mostly Portuguese style food. Sometimes
there is fresh fishon the menu.
W from Boston liked the restaurant
"The rooms are clean, well appointed and comfortable. The bathrooms
are large and modern . The restaurant was excellent with lots of
choice. Try the Pudim de Cafe desert ... it is to die for. It is
a combination of the traditional Cape Verdean pudim (pudding) with
the excellent and flavorful local coffee Cafe de Fogo. "
price £30 per day per person in double room.
Hotel Jenny Sao Vicente
Perched on a hill above the harbour. It has fine
views yet is not far from restaurants and bars. It is built around
a small, cool courtyard but some rooms face the sea. The owner's
ancestors were Cornish aristocrats called St Aubyn, but he has lived
in Senegal and speaks better French than English. It is clean, correct,
reasonably central and with nice views and an attentive manager.
F from Bristol liked the staff
"Near a good restaurant with live music in the evenings. We found
all the staff very friendly and always ready to help in any way
. l.Breakfasts were a delight with homemade produce and a credit
to the staff."
price £35 per day per person in double room.
Hotel Bluebell Santa Antao
In the street that climbs up from the old fishing
harbour and the small beach. You can wander around the sleepy town
or take a taxi to the quaint little settlement of Fontanhas, which
time has passed by. The manager is Belgian and keeps the place clean
and humming. It is small but has a restaurant
J from Liverpool liked nearby restaurants
"Clean and comfortable, an ideal base for a walking holiday in
the north of the island. The Chez Teresa restuarnt across the road
is worthy of a mention as although it has only a small menu the
food is excellent and the tiramisu to die for. All the restaurants
served excellent fish meals but a special mention must go to O Veleirobar
and restauranr for a superb fish soup and the ever friendly welcome
of Fernando the barman."
price £30 per day per person in double room.
