The town of Sal Rei is in the north-eastern corner of Boa Vista wide open to the predominant North-East Trade Winds which blow at Force 5/6 in winter and Force 3/4 in summer. The islet of Sal Rei provides protection for the Praia de Estoril and the Praia de Chaves where the best hotels are located. Much of the development is concentrated on the exposed Praia de Cabral where the sea can be rough at times. The best beach is in the far south at Praia de Santa Monica but this is currently only reachable over a very bad sandswept road at high cost. It is also quite rough.
